Looking for an individualized way to identify where students are at in terms of their grammar knowledge for the grade level curriculum expectations?

This packet presents you with four tools that can be used for grammar.
GRAMMAR MAPS: The grammar maps are a way for students to track their progress while they are learning grammatical concepts. As students progress throughout the year, and as they master the grammatical concepts, they can colour in the star that matches the concept they have mastered, or you can place a star on there. Mastery of the grammatical concepts can be based on the following criteria:
- Whether the student is able to IDENTIFY the grammatical concept;
- Whether the student is able to USE the grammatical concept in isolation;
- Whether the student is able to USE the grammatical concept in their writing;
There are a variety of maps presented for each grade level that present grammatical concepts in various orders.

GRAMMAR RUBRICS: The grammar rubrics are a way for you to monitor student progress and understanding of grammatical concepts. The levels presented on the rubrics are as follows:
- LEVEL 4: students understand the grammatical concept, and no errors are made.
- LEVEL 3: students understand the grammatical concept, but errors are sometimes made.
- LEVEL 2: students are on their way to understand the grammatical concept, but some errors are consistently made.
- LEVEL 1: students are beginning to understand the grammatical concept, but more support and practice is needed.
Students should be at a level 3, where they sometimes make errors, but they are able to correct those errors and these errors are rarely made.

LET’S FIX OUR GRAMMAR: These small note cards can be attached to student writing to indicate the grammatical errors they have made. Students should be encouraged to re-read their writing piece and find the grammatical errors. You can support students in this by underlining the errors, or meeting with them in a small group of students who have made similar errors. These cards can be used to also direct students to the specific grammatical concept they might need to review.

GRAMMAR CHECKLISTS: The grammar checklists can be used in addition to the rubrics, and focus on the following three criteria:
- Whether the student is able to IDENTIFY the grammatical concept;
- Whether the student is able to USE the grammatical concept in isolation;
- Whether the student is able to USE the grammatical concept in their writing;

This packet includes the above three tools for all six grade levels, using the Ontario curriculum expectations. The grade levels are not labelled on the sheets so that if a student needs a lower grade, they are not made aware of this.
