A monthly assignment that helps teachers & students build effective portfolios - revamped for my younger students. Click here for the intermediate version of this assignment
The assignment asks students to choose one piece of finished work as a writing sample. They then write reflection questions regarding their choice. (This satisfies expectations 4.1, 4.2, & 4.3 in the writing portion of the Ontario Curriculum)
The students also write their academic goal for the next month using the provided template.
Finally, this assignment comes with a checklist for evaluation, as well as space to record notes from student/teacher conferences.
I use this assignment in my language and home room classes. We complete the assignment each month, which generates complete packages for their student portfolio. Because the students have to respond to their grades and identify their own areas for growth, it highlights the students' strengths and weaknesses (in their own words!) and feelings about their work. The results of these assignments serve as an excellent reference during parent teacher conferences to keep things student-focussed. (VERY helpful in a school where parents can be demanding and/or critical of teachers!)
