Have fun reviewing 5th grade math skills this December with this Holiday Escape Room! The Escape Room is a fun and engaging Christmas themed math game based on the Escape Room attractions that can be found across the world. Similar to the Escape Room attractions, students will be “locked in” during this game, and the object is to find the codes to “escape” within a given time period.
Students are volunteers at their local mall, but an impostor locks them into the gift wrapping room with the intention of stealing all the donation money. The object of the escape room activity is to uncover the impostor and escape in the time given. Students will complete four math tasks and after the successful completion of each math task, they will be given a clue that will help them eliminate suspects. If they successfully complete all the tasks, they will have all the information they need to catch the correct suspect and escape, saving the donation money.

6th Grade Christmas Escape Room
In order to be successful, teams will need to use good communication, logic, attention to detail, cooperation and their math skills.
This particular Escape Room focuses on standards that are taught in fifth grade.
The following skills are reviewed during the game:
Adding and subtracting decimals
Calculating sale prices using fractions
Equivalent decimals and fractions
If you work with a small group on math skills during intervention time, this game would be a fun game to play together, and would allow you to review needed skills in a fun and motivating way.
The activity requires the use of technology because students will need to be able to access Google Forms and their Google Drives. The use of the Google Form reduces the amount of preparation and printing for the teacher. It also will only progress to the next task if the correct code is entered which means no grading is required.
Students will be divided into teams where the object is for their team to escape before time is up. I recommend 60-90 minutes, but you can vary the time based on the needs of your class.
