This Keep It Hands On activity infuses literature, summer reading, and art. Students have the opportunity to reflect on summer reading (or perhaps an article or book you read together as a class) and create beautiful works of art. Learning Target: Students will be able to describe the importance of diversity, acceptance, and understanding of those who are different.
Included in this download are simple directions for the teacher to lead the activity, examples of student work, and quotes related to acceptance to read throughout the activity.
Background Information: When I implemented this activity, students read summer reading books focused on students who experienced intolerance in school or in their communities. This activity was done in advisory for all students to connect with each other on the topic of acceptance even though they may have read different books throughout the summer.
