This 2-page worksheet uses an excerpt from The Secret Garden to give kids some challenging practice in identifying adjectives, adverbs, conjunctions, and simple subjects and predicates in compound sentences.
Using examples from literature makes the sentences more interesting but also more difficult. Kids break down well-written literature and become familiar with more complex sentence structure, which should also help to improve their own writing skills.
Instructions are given for each sentence; some ask students to identify adjectives/adverbs and draw arrows to the words they modify, and others ask students to find conjunctions and the simple subjects and predicates in each part of the sentence. Some are challenging, but students who understand these concepts should be able to complete them.
Designed for Grades 3-4. Supports Common Core standards L.3.1a, L.3.1h, L.3.1i.
Answer key is included.
