This handout is organized into three parts:
1. The two core apostrophe functions (possessives and contractions)
2. When NOT to use apostrophes
3. Apostrophe Odds & Ends
This handout is paginated so that the core material (item 1) occurs on the first two pages, for easy front-and-back printing. The optional material (items 2 and 3) occur on pages 3 and 4. This way, you might print the optional material as a separate handout.
When teaching punctuation and other mechanics, my philosophy is to share the basic rule for students who are simply trying to master basics, but also to offer them at least a glimpse of the bigger, more complex world of writing. This way, I can offer something of value both to my students working at a basic level and to my more advanced students. This handout reflects that teaching style.
