Verb Playing Cards

The verbs on these playing cards encourage students to use powerful action words that stir emotions and engage readers.

Regular use improves writing proficiencies.

Deck includes:

52 verb cards

A master list of verbs and definitions

An instruction card listing several ways to use the cards

Sample Whole Class Activity:

Deal one card (face down) to each student. Students complete a 3 - 4 minute quick write or journal entry using the verb on the card. Extension: After 3 minutes, students switch papers and continue the story using the same verb in a different way. Repeat 4 times and share completed pieces with the class.

Sample Group Activity:

Small groups of students act out a verb to teach it to the class.
Extension: Students create a word wall using their verb along with its definition and a picture.

Hyphenated Adjective Playing Cards

Hyphenated modifiers drop instant tone and voice into student writings.

The activities that accompany the cards make learning how to use hyphenated modifiers simple, memorable and enjoyable.

Deck includes:

52 hyphenated modifier cards

A master list of hyphenated modifiers along with two coordinating noun suggestions

An instruction card listing several ways to use the cards

2nd Edition: 2015 Version

Ways to Use Hyphenated Adjective/Modifier Playing Cards:

Drafting:
Students use one hyphenated modifier as a springboard to craft a timed free write or to weave into a writing piece in progress.

Collaborating:
Pairs of students write and act out original scripts using several hyphenated modifiers.

Extension: Student pairs visit learning stations where hyphenate modifiers are displayed. They will write short news articles or diary entries for each hyphenated modifier.

Revising:
Students switch papers and add hyphenated modifiers to another student’s draft.

Spiraling:
Distribute the master list of hyphenated modifiers and announce that several students will be participating in a contest. Have ten contestants combine two modifiers into one well-constructed sentence. Select an MC to host the event and a panel of judges to score the entries on creativity and form. Sample entry: Tiffany Lawrence, the twenty-two-year-old, raven-haired beauty from Dallas, will represent Texas in the Miss America Pageant this year.

Assessing:
Students create and present multimedia projects. One portion of the presentation must demonstrate knowledge and proper use of hyphenated modifiers.
