Product Description
Want students to put grammar into critical context and understand the spirit of the rules instead of just memorize them? Use higher-order thinking skills to help students learn grammar in a unique, engaging, and memorable way!

In this project, students will choose a grammar topic to represent as a poem; they are encouraged to give colons personalities, explain what exactly run-ons “do”, use extended metaphors, and capture the spirit of what different moods or parts of speech do in a sentence! They have 60 grammar topics to choose from, pulled from what is specified in the Common Core standards for grades 5-12. Students get help from 9 poetry prompts, their free choice of which poetic form to use, and a page of brainstorming help to jumpstart their thinking.

The final product is a paper that not only has a student poem on it, but the student also includes grammar rules and example sentences so that the paper could be displayed or serve as an at-a-glance snapshot of a grammatical concept. Hang them around the room all year long as reminders of good writing!

Once written, poems are read aloud to the class. Peers take active notes during read-alouds to capture new knowledge, and students are assessed for effective speaking skills that match the tone and mood of his or her poem.

I also wrote an example poem for you to use as an example final product/mentor text, so feel free to critique it in a whole-class discussion and set expectations for student work!

This 6-page download includes:
• 3 pages of step-by-step directions, 9 prompts, 60 grammar topics, suggested poetic forms, and a brainstorming page to get started
• Project Rubric: Common Core standards for speaking, writing, and language included
• Active Listening Notes: students record observations from each other’s poems during read-alouds
• Example Poem: an original poem/mentor text about colons for whole-class critique

Common Core standards used: W.5 & SL.6 (exact grammar standard will vary by the topic written about).
