Learning grammar through proofreading can be fun! This 31-page printable activity presents 20 LETTERS AND JOURNAL ENTRIES from one of Ms. Jones’s not-very-proficient English students, a student with common and numerous writing mistakes. (Will you tell your students you’ve seen these mistakes in their papers?)
Many of the letters and other entries are based on jokes the student has heard or on his humorous confusion about certain situations.
As you know, students often need to SEE mistakes in order to UNDERSTAND them. This activity is designed so your students can, in effect, become the teacher by finding errors and making corrections.
The mistakes included in the papers are everyday ones that you as an English teacher have seen in many (maybe too many?) papers you’ve read. Warning: your students will need lots of red ink!
Your students will USE LANGUAGE SKILLS to CORRECT the papers by looking for the errors in SPELLING, PUNCTUATION, WORD USAGE, WORD CHOICE, and MECHANICS.
Since humor in the classroom often translates into learning, students can reinforce their knowledge of English and language arts as they edit the work.
This classroom-tested is suitable for upper elementary, junior high, high school, and adult students.
