The Grammar and Mechanics Grades 4-8 Curricular Map
may just be that wheel you don't have to reinvent with your grade-level team or department this summer. This comprehensive instructional scope and sequence is perfectly aligned to the grade-level Common Core Language Strand Standards and the Language Progressive Skill Standards.
The document includes twice-per-week instructional planning of one grammar-usage focus and one mechanics focus per day. For example, common nouns and definite/indefinite articles on one day and proper nouns and their capitalization on the second day of the week. In other words, the document provides the instructional pace that most teachers use for direct instruction in the grammar, usage, and mechanics Standards. If you are using more of a Daily Oral Language or mini-lessons approach, this curricular map won't be for you.
The instructional plan also includes the review Standards to make sense of the recursive grammatical instruction that the Common Core authors describe in Appendix A. Yes, we have to teach those parts of speech every year!
Simply print off the CCSS Language Strand Standards 1, 2, 3 and the Language Progressive Skill Standards for each grade level and my Grammar and Mechanics Grades 4-8 Curricular Map. Then plug in the Standards and grammar/mechanics instructional focus (should be foci, I know) into your curricular (not curriculum) map or lesson plan book. Obviously, feel free to change any, but most teachers will see the instructional sense in the sequence of skills, concepts, and topics.
Of course, I'm providing this resource to entice teachers to check out my full-year Teaching Grammar and Mechanics Grades 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 programs,
which provide the lessons and alignment documents to teach to this curricular map. However, teachers who already have plenty of instructional resources to teach grammar, usage, and mechanics, will still find value in this resource.
Note that my interactive notebook, Grammar Interactive Notebook-Teaching Grammar and Mechanics Interactive Notebook
and my literacy centers: Language Conventions Academic Literacy Center Grades 4-8 and Remedial Grammar, Usage, and Mechanics Literacy Center
each have curricular maps and alignment documents.
