Supporting First Nations/ Native American Literature in the Classroom
Grandmother's Dreamcatcher, written by Becky ray McCain and illustrated by Stacey Schuett, describes the tradition and meaning behind dreamcatchers while engaging readers with universal themes of loss, anticipation and learning from elders.
This resource taps into the comprehension skills of: connection, visualization, retelling, and exploring meaning. Easy to use reading response pages have been created for each lesson. The worksheets have been adapted for all levels of abilities; including lined, interlined and modified versions of the response sheets.
Mini-booklets are also provided for students to use as Dream Journals.
Student evaluation and teacher evaluation rubrics are also included.
To obtain a copy of this book and others like it, I recommend checking out Strong Nations, an online bookstore supplying indigenous and Native American books. Not only do they have an extensive selection, they provide themed book bundles for all age ranges.
