Music and Reading
A favorite Literacy Center activity for my first graders has always been the “Music and Reading Center.” At this center, we have a collection of the songs we have learned in our classroom. Some of these songs support our other curricular content, some of these songs are holiday or special day songs we like to sing, some of these songs are an integral part of our daily classroom routine and schedule, and some of these songs are songs that we have written from the poetry the kids themselves have created. At this center, each song is contained in an extra-large envelope. In each envelope is the simple sheet music to the song, a rhyme and draw sheet where students fill in missing lyrics from a word box, lyric phrase strips for the students to put in order, and lyric word flashcards for the students to put in order, as well. Also at this center are ipads, a computer, or another device on which the students can play the included mp4 video file of each song and listen through headphones. We have many “song envelopes” from which the students can choose at our “Music and Reading Center.”
One Arts Infusion Collaborative seeks to create original music and poetry that supports and enhances curricular content, celebrates holidays, stirs imaginations, and helps build meaningful connections to learning.
