Introduce students to the basic features of graphs with this powerpoint.
This lesson leads students through recognizing positive and negative slopes on a graph by comparing how variables increase and decrease. Student will learn that positive slopes are created when both variable increase together. Negative slopes are created when one variable increases while the other decreases. This presentation does not use calculating actual slope values. Instead, I have found it beneficial to teach students to recognize positive and negative slopes before calculating.
The lesson goes on to define independent and dependent variables. Students will learn the difference and where they belong on a graph.
Finally, the lesson goes into the visual meaning of linear graphs. Students are asked to identify the linear graphs and nonlinear graphs.
The lesson wraps up with creative thinking, asking students to create their own graphs to meet criteria.
A 3-question quiz is included at the end to check for understanding.
