Each year, we have students bring in a pie for the class to sample. We usually do this the day before students leave on Thanksgiving break. Students spend the day being pie taste testers and completing math activities about their tasting.
Students taste various pies and record how much they like it based on a likert scale (1-10). Afterwards, students decide on which was their least and most favorite pie that they sampled. While students are tasting or before, I just write the name of each type of pie on a large piece of paper. Students place a post-it for their least favorite and most favorite on the large papers. For example, students may place a red colored post-it for least favorite and green colored post-it for most favorite. Afterwards, students record the number of students for each pie that have it as their least favorite and most favorite. Students then create a double bar graph to show data. Finally, students answer conclusion sentences and create 3 math problems based on the chart. Students can trade papers or you can share out math questions for other students to possibly answer.
Have fun and happy tasting!
