In this assignment, students must use (and adapt) lines from a song in order to create their own graphic conflict poem. This bundle includes the following:
- assignment description and criteria
- a link to a graphic poem example - "It was not death, for I stood up" by Emily Dickinson
- song lyrics - "Love the Way You Lie" by Eminem and Rihanna
- song lyrics analysis (teacher's key)
- graphic poem template
I go over the assignment with the students, and then I show them the Dickinson graphic poem example to give them an idea of what their finished assignment could look like. Then we listen to the Eminem song and students must identify the types of conflict present in the song. Finally, students use the lines from the song to create their own graphic conflict poem. You do not need to use the Eminem song as the assignment is left open so you, or your students, could use any song that involves conflict.
