This is a mini unit (3-5 days) to deepen students' understanding of the graphic novel as an emerging genre of "serious" literature. I use this in conjunction with our reading of Satrapi's Persepolis so that students can understand and appreciate author's methods in this unique genre.
Note: I used an excerpt from Mike Chinn's Writing and Illustrating the Graphic Novel (2004) as a background informational text for part of this unit. It is available in public and school libraries in my area. If you don't have access to that text, the associated assignment could be easily modified to work with another text of your choosing.
