The Common Core State Standards require an increased focus on nonfiction/informational text. This two page graphic organizer is designed to address this by providing teachers with a clear, useful chart that can be paired with any nonfiction text.
➡ This organizer asks students to closely read a single nonfiction/informational text, and to analyze and comment on elements of the text including:
➡ Thesis statement/author's purpose
➡ Introductory strategies
➡ Textual support/evidence
➡ Implied audience
➡ Writing strategies
➡ Overall reader reaction to the text
➡ This organizer asks students to consider each element listed above and to analyze them while providing textual support within the right-hand column of the chart. Within the column on the left, I have included a number of questions that are designed to frame students' thinking, but these are not questions that students have to answer within this organizer.
I have included more specific directions as well on the final page of the document.
The use of this versatile organizer will encourage students to read actively and engage deeply with nonfiction text; it helped my students, and I am confident it will help your students become perceptive close readers as well.
