This simple graphic organizer is a handy tool for your upper elementary-, middle- and high-school students to infer from texts. It is also a formative assessment for us to dissect students' thinking when they infer, and understand the challenges students may face when inferring.
The Making Inference Chart includes three parts:
1. Clues from the text
2. My schema
Students need to use textual evidence combined with their schema (background knowledge) to support their inference. Teachers can use this chart to infer character traits, characters' relationship, themes, and underlying messages from the story, or even some non-fictional materials.
