In the first part of this assignment, students will analyze the different roles of men and women within the society of Gilead. For each role they identify for men and women within society (Commanders, Marthas, etc), they will need to write a few sentences about how that societal post functions in society, and rate their level of importance. They will do this for male roles on page 1, and then for female roles on page 2. On page 3, they will need to think critically about how the society functions as a whole, and identify five roles that are most importance to the prosperity and continuation of Gilead. Once they have completed the hierarchy chart on page 3, they will share with a partner or group for a discussion and/or debate about their views.
This assignment can be given to students while reading the novel The Handmaid's Tale or after they have completed the entire novel. I would suggest that students are at least up to chapter 10. That way, they'll have a clearer understanding of how the society of Gilead is structured. This would be difficult to do if they have only begun their reading.
