This is a file of 27 graphic organizers to help build student reading comprehension. The graphic organizers can be used with any story and in many ways! Teach the comprehension skill or strategy as a whole group by modeling how to fill in the graphic organizer on a story read by the entire class. Ask students to show what they know after reading a story independently or listening to a story at a listening center. Use the graphic organizer in a small group to reinforce the comprehension skill as you read together. The possibilities are endless!
Comprehension skills and strategies addressed include:
Sequence of Events, Author’s Word Choice, Infer/Predict, Compare/Contrast, Informational Text, Question, Author’s Purpose, Analyze/Evaluate, Cause and Effect, Figurative Language, Summarize, Story Structure, Visualize, Text and Graphic Features, Using Context, Conclusions, Cause and Effect, Understanding Characters, Fact and Opinion, Monitor/Clarify, Biography, Humorous Fiction, Formal and Informal Language, and Point of View.
As an added bonus, if you teach second grade using HMH Journeys you will be set for the entire year! This file is aligned with the HMH Journeys reading curriculum for second grade. It includes a sequence of instruction and addresses all of the comprehension skills and strategies focused on during each week's lesson in the second grade Journeys curriculum. It also aligns with the Common Core State Standards and often requires students to provide evidence from the text to support their ideas.
