This is a very simple way to gather data, chart data, graph data, and then write word problems with the data collected.
I am using this with a wide range of age and ability groups with candy corn. I have several bags of candy corn so each child will get to eat the candy they grab as we begin this small group activity. My groups will have 5 students. After they have each grabbed a handful of candy corn, we will count and write the information on the data chart. Then that information will be shown on a bar graph. The bar graph will be used to write word problems about the information. The problems can then be solved by other members of the group.
I plan to do it with different students at Christmas using some type of inexpensive candy. Then again at Valentine's Day with candy hearts. Of course M & M's would be great any time! If you don't want to use edible items just get a stash of buttons, pennies, marbles, etc.
