This resource includes five mystery pictures created by plotting coordinate pairs in all four quadrants.
Your students will be challenged to plot carefully in order to create the “math art.”
The five pictures include
GraphA - mitten (23 coordinate pairs)
GraphB - ice skate (39 coordinate pairs)
GraphC - snow shovel (41 coordinate pairs)
GraphD - hot cocoa (54 coordinate pairs)
GraphE - MartinLutherKingJr (97 coordinate pairs, including some decimals - 0.5)
Samples of completed graphs/answer keys are also included.
Some details are included on the graphs, but other than a small added image (and the fact that it is January) there are no other hints to the completed design.
All graphs involve positive and negative integers. GraphE, MLK, also includes a few coordinates with a decimal value (0.5, only). It is important for students to learn to estimate this decimal increment and this activity provides a good introduction to that skill.
Use this activity for early finishers or as a special challenge. It is also great for adding “art” to math or for coordinate graph practice.
