Bundle Description

Looking for a trio of graphing labs for your students? This product combines three wonderful graphing activities that provide students the opportunity to collect their own measurements, use data tables, construct graphs, and then interpret those graphs to answer analysis questions. I have provided a sequence that places an emphasis on scatter plots in this graphing bundle!

Included with this bundle are the following quests for students to embark on! These quests are easy to prep and fun for students. They easily beat a traditional graphing worksheet!

Quest- Keep Up!- Students are tasked with finding if there is a relationship between a student's height and the number of steps in takes to walk down a set path. Students work together to collect their data, build their scatter plot, and then use their scatter plot to discern the relationship, if any, that may exist. This also opens a discussion about the need for large sample sizes during an experiment to provide the best results. In the gamified story, students are being chased by a plant monster. They must bake a decision as to whether or not they backtrack to save a trapped friend. Blank consequence cards are included!

Within this download you will get a suggested lesson plan, the student lab handout, answer key, and blank game consequence slips!

In the game story setting, student groups are met by a strange group of entities that wonder about humans. Claiming to be merely observers, these strangers share their own wingspan and height data, so students must create a scatter plot for them as well. At the end of this quest, student groups must decide if they should travel with the band of strangers for further study. If you are creating your own gamified classroom, I have included blank consequence slips so you can reward or punish groups based on their decision!

Quest- The Skulip Grower- In this activity students will take measurements from some creepy looking plants from the game realm of Aureus Imperium called Skulips. These flowers have skull-like petals and they smell like rotting meat to attract flies as pollinators. They come in three colors; violet, white, and yellow. Students must measure the height of these plants, observe the color of the petals, count the number of maggots on the flowers, and count the number of flies attracted to each flower. Once they have this data, they create pie graphs to show the percentages of each flower color compared to the whole, they generate bar graphs to compare the average plant height for each color, they produce a double-line graph to show how time affects the number of flies and maggots found on each flower, and finally they create a scatter plot to display the relationship between a fertilizer ingredient and plant height.

This activity includes a suggested lesson plan, student quest handout, paper copies of 16 Skulip plants, an answer key, and instructions for possible 3-D Skulip plants that can be created for students to physically manipulate.

Students will be able to demonstrate skills related to these learning targets:

I can explain when to use bar graphs, line graphs, pie graphs, and scatter plots.

I can collect data and construct a scatter plot to determine if there is a relationship or trend between two sets of data
