This is a great activity to do with K-2nd graders! It focuses students on sorting and counting their stars and adds a “nature” component by having the students pretend their stars are fruit and vegetable seeds they need to sort for their classroom garden. I used this activity with 1st and 2nd graders and they absolutely loved it! For the “seed stars” I used colored stars from Michael's. They cost me $2.99 for a pack of 120. This lesson also covers the CCSS.Math.Content.K.MD.B.3 for kindergarten, CCSS.Math.Content.1.MD.C.4 for first grade and CCSS.Math.Content.2.MD.D.10 for second grade.
When students have finished their individual graph, you can graph the class results on a giant piece of graphing paper. It’s really fun to see the students’ results individually and as a class! See the photos that I’ve included!
