Just Ask Judy

This free end of year sample graphing activity engages your first, second, and third grade students in collecting data by picking and replacing the letters of the word doughnut in a paper lunch bag until all the letters have been picked. Then they use their collected data to complete a bar graph and answer questions. Although National Doughnut Day is the first Friday in June, this activity could be completed at any time during the year. Because there are two u’s in doughnut, this is denoted with subscripted numbers, u1 and u2. There are 7 usable pages included in this sample. These are color letter tiles, black and white letter tiles, a tally table for collecting data, a bar graph to show the collected data, a bar graph (suitable for second and third grades) that requires writing the title, labeling the axes, and labeling the bars, and a page of questions for interpreting the graph. Student directions (black/ gray/ white) are also included.
