This lab activity is the perfect introduction for the school year. It is a blast for kids to chase down grasshoppers and try to measure the bouncy, trouncy, flouncy, pouncy fun, fun, fun, fun, fun, bugs. The lab takes 50 minutes with grasshoppers and another 20-30 minutes to graph and have a conversation about the graphs. I use this lab to introduce the lab requirements and expectations at the beginning to the year. Also to help them get back into the swing of things with mathematics and measurements. I have the students collect grasshoppers as "homework". They keep them under clear cups and measure with regular rulers. I place masking tape with measurements on the floor to measure jumps.
