The Gravitation Project 1 - Planet Earth, is an excellent Windows application created for Honors and AP Physics 1 high school students. The application calculates a large amount of astronomical data for planet Earth.

The following information about planet Earth is available and used by this application:

Radius of Orbit

Sidereal Period of Revolution

Radius of the planet

Period of Rotation around its own axis

Initially, this application calculates the following:

Strength of gravity on the surface

Average density

Altitude of an isosynchronous satellite

Average orbital velocity

Period of a satellite at an altitude of 1,000 km

Escape velocity

The main feature of this application is that for any altitude you wish to enter (from 0 km to 1 million km), the computer will find the following values:

Strength of Gravity

Orbital Velocity of Satellites

Orbital Period of Satellites

Centripetal acceleration

It is recommended that after the students calculate the different values at various altitudes, they do the graph Altitude vs. Gravity (for altitudes from 0 km to 40,000 km). There are several trends that students can find while working in this project. For instance, at low altitudes, gravity decreases by 0.003 m/s^2 for each kilometer gained in altitude.

There are three good things about this product. First, it includes a 17-page tutorial in pdf format that explains in detail, and with 12 numerical examples, all the concepts in gravitation that students need to know in this project. Second, the students will be highly motivated while they work for about 3 hours to complete the Gravitation project. And third, with this application, the teacher will be able to enter any altitude quickly and generate a significant amount of valuable astronomical information.

Again, this physics application is for computers using Windows 10 or newer.
