This lab will help your students understand how gravitational motion works. First, students will create the fabric of space by draping lycra fabric over a circle of chairs. Then, they will add "planets" of different masses and observe how their motion changes on the fabric. This lab includes a reading and pre-lab questions to get your students the background information they need about force and gravitational motion. This is also a great refresher for students who were absent.
After completing the lab, students record their observations and answer analysis questions.
To do this lab you'll need at least one yard of lycra fabric, two different sized spheres, like a wooden ball and a heavier ball, like a marble, a circle of chairs and clothespins or clips to secure the fabric, per group.
