This is an engaging activity great for your forces and motions unit. Includes an investigation journal and STEM Activity. The activities meet the *Next Generation Science Standards 3rd Grade Forces and Interactions, 4th Grade Energy, and 3rd, 4th, 5th Grade Science and Engineering Practices.
In activity 1 students will complete an investigation following the scientific method to answer the question:
Does the height of a marble affect the distance a cup will travel?
Through the investigation students will learn about forces and interactions. Vocabulary focus is on energy, work, kinetic energy, gravity, and gravitational potential energy.
In activity 2 students will take what they have learned and build a marble roller coaster. The activity follows the engineering design process. Students must define the problem, test and redesign, and share how to build their roller coaster.
Supplies are simple and inexpensive. The tubes can be stored and used from year to year.

½ inch pipe wrap insulation (available at hardware stores and inexpensive)
Masking tape, paper cups, ruler, tape measure, books or blocks, paper, marbles, scissors, and other items that may help hold the coaster together.
Students will love designing the roller coaster. Let them get creative. Teachers will love watching the students explore and the simple supplies.
