A Grey Scale or Value Scale is a tool that can be used to help you understand or observe tonal value. This can be used to identify the complex combination of values that create the area of ‘shading’ in life. Creating a grey scale is an opportunity for you to learn what tonal value looks like and the understand the range of values you can achieve and use in your work. Value helps to add depth to your work and is important when making your 2D art work appear 3D. Even in 3 dimensional objects, we can observe many values of tone in objects or people.
