I use this type of quiz in my own classroom in order to thwart online summaries available on sites like Sparknotes and Shmoop. When I assign reading, I want my students to actually read the text of the short story. Therefore, instead of quiz questions that focus on general plot and characterization, this type of quiz focuses on: (1) proper nouns (like the names of minor characters and places in the setting), (2) numbers of things, (3) lists (like naming one of the items on a shelf), and (4) other specific details that should be apparent after a night of close reading. My intent is not to trick students and force them to resort to recording long lists of minutiae; instead, it’s to encourage them to read closely, critically, and consciously so that they consider the choices the author is making. We can then discuss the effect or impact of these choices during a follow-up class discussion (but first I need a means of encouraging students to read).
