The following is a role play activity for the Great Depression. Students choose from a list of 13 defined people living during the Great Depression and take on that persons role to describe the hardships and sufferings they faced.
For their pre-defined person they must summarize the effect in which the Great Depression had on the following aspects of their lives:
- Employment and Income
- Family Life
- Race/Gender Relations
- Physical Health
- Emotional Health
This activity comes with a small grading rubric that can be added to or adjusted to fit your classroom needs. You can have students share their answers aloud in class and grade them via the rubric while they present (this is what I do) or you can collect their answers and grade the assignment via the rubric.
This assignment works best as a Formative Assessment so that both students and teacher alike can gage understanding and mastery of the effect on people's lives during the Great Depression. So with that in mind, this assignment works best once students have a background knowledge and have been provided with information (via classroom notes and readings) regarding lives during the Great Depression and effects on America during the Great Depression. This assignment allows students to apply that understanding to this critical thinking application role play activity.
