Are you looking for an interactive activity to introduce students to The Great Depression, John Steinbeck, and his work Of Mice and Men? If so, this is a quick 1-2 period lesson that will do just that. Students will engage in making a puzzle of the key pieces of the Great Depression that the author experienced and impact the setting of the novel. Each student is assigned one "piece" of the puzzle, and they have to figure out where it belongs while discussing with other students what they have, then share out to the class, culminating in each student taking a close-up view of all of the pieces when answering analytical questions that get them to really consider the meaning and connections. Both you and your students will walk out the door knowing that they understand the key components that influence the novel and have an idea of the bigger picture of The Great Depression without copious notes or boring lectures.
