Sometimes, students are intimidated by large, complex novels. This chapter briefing assignment is designed to make these novels more manageable for students by enabling them to become experts on individual chapters.
Although this briefing assignment is tailored for Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, it is not difficult to adapt for other novels. For instance, I have adapted it for Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter
The intent of this assignment is to put students in charge of single chapters. Moving beyond summary, they are asked to examine several literary elements of Great Expectations, from theme, to setting, to diction. In addition, they are tasked with making connections between the main storyline and the many subplots that Dickens weaves into the novel.
Because English teachers are pressed for time, I have designed these briefings to be presented, but they could easily be written or posted online.
