Great Expectations Writing Assignments
For each of the three stages in Great Expectations, write a paragraph of 10-15 sentences describing Pip's changes in that particular stage of the novel. Each essay must have a creative title that is not your topic; ie, do not write "Pip's Changes in Stage 1." Each essay must begin with a compound sentence (two independent clauses joined with either a connecting conjunction or a semi-colon) that not only identifies the change in Pip, but also specifies the cause of his transformation. Each topic sentence must contain a specific contention, the point you are going to prove. Several sentences of support will follow, including four properly documented quotations, one of which is longer than three lines. Each paragraph must end with a summarizing clincher that is a complex sentence (one dependent and one independent clause). Save this criteria sheet; you will need it for all three essays. There are three lines in front of each "Grading Criteria" requirement. As you proofread your rough drafts, check off the requirements for each individual essay.
