Product Description
This paper mainly gives the comprehensive analysis of Estella’s characteristics in great expectations including the causes of her characters and the influences on her tragic life. Dickens, the author, endows her with rich chracteristics and emotions, which makes the development of Estella becomes a crucial clue throughout the novel. So knowing clearly about the characters of Estella in an all-round way is very important for readers to understand this novel profoundly. This paper lays emphasis on the analysis of arrogance, indifference and veiled kindness in her characteristics. Brought up in a rich family and infused with the idea of hatred and revenge, Estella shows her arrogance and difference distinctly in front of people, which makes readers abominate such figure. However, her sorrowfulness and lonelyness behind her apathy arouses readers’ compassion and heartache, for she sacrifices all her happiness in order to help Miss Havisham revenge. Thus, this paper also analyzes Estella’s gratitude for her foster mother and her veiled kindness. Due to her kindness awakened by Pip, she suffers from her emotional struggle in her inner world, which makes her hesitate about her behavour and end up being submissive. Therefore, this paper, in its third part, gives elaborate explanations about why Estella has such characteristics by analyzing Estella’s family and social environment where she is brought up as well as her education. Estella’s family life and the education she accepts are distorted by her adopted mother, which impose negative influences on the development of Estella’s personalities. Her attitude towards her own life is pessimistic under the control of Miss Havisham. And in the last part of the paper, it mainly introduces Estella’s tragic life under the influences of her characters and the change of her characteristics after experiencing all tastes of human life. This paper hopes that readers can have a thorough understanding about this figure as well as the special clue of the novel.
