Challenge students to review chapters of The Great Gatsby by engaging in speed date debates, where students pair up and argue for or against 24 different claims (8 per every three chapters) from the novel — with a new debate partner each time. Use this after each set of three chapters (1-3, 4-6, and 7-9) for three separate days of fun!
This activity is great for authentic review after students have finished reading a section of The Great Gatsby; students have to support or refute a claim using textual evidence, but they only have 45 seconds to make their point before their partner's turn to argue. After both sides have debated, a short free-for-all ensues before students move to another debate partner and claim. This activity gets loud, but it's one students love — and one that helps them remember key points from the text.
