This is a tool that I used to help students keep track of their ideas about each major character in The Great Gatsby. This is part one that includes Nick, Gatsby, Tom, and Daisy. Part two is a separate Free Item that includes Myrtle, George, and Jordan.
Students write down their first thoughts about each character's American Dream. They then write down questions, confusion, and ideas that they have about that character's American Dream. As they progress through the novel, the continue to track their thoughts about the characters. They write down how their thoughts are changing, and what new ideas they have about the characters and what is happening to their American Dream. When the reading is complete, each student completes the thought map with his final ideas.
These sheets are extremely helpful for students when writing final essays and ties into the Common Core Standard RL.2 for determining themes for all grade levels 9-12 depending on the grade level at which The Great Gatsby is read.
The thought map can be enlarged to allow for students to write quotes and note page numbers from the book. It can also be modified for use with other novels and for informational reading.
