This project makes for a great synthesis of geography concepts! Your students will have to create a physical map of a made-up, fictional continent. Depending on your students, you could give the project soon after teaching map skills, continents, and landforms or at the end of the year as a review. I've had tremendous success doing this project with both 4th and 5th grade students. It's especially great for students who can typically be difficult to engage as well as children with special needs. In regard to grading, it's a great assessment grade or even extra credit.
This product contains two options for how to do the project. One is to create a map and write a paragraph and the other is to only complete the map. Prompts and checklists are also included with each, as well as teacher notes and a sample of a model map.
