When trying to help their students remember the names of the five Great Lakes, many teachers use the accronym "HOMES" (for Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, and Superior). The problem with using this accronym is that students do not learn which Great Lake is which.
Instead, try teaching your students the memory device "Super Man Helps Every One." It is a quick and easy way to remember the five Great Lakes names AND their correct order from left to right (west to east) on a map of the United States. I have found that it helps my students correctly label these bodies of water on U.S. geography quizzes, and it stays in their heads long-term!
