PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Students will learn about the shipping industry on the Great Lakes during the 1800s and 1900s. The Great Lakes’ Shipping History Webquest uses a great website created by the Smithsonian. The website allows students to explore the ships, cargoes, harbors, and industries that connected the Midwest and East Coast through the Great Lakes. Check out the website at:

http://americanhistory.si.edu/onthewater/exhibition/4_2.html
Click here to view the website.

The webquest contains 40 questions and is a great way for students to learn more about the following topics:

• Industrialization in the 1800s and early 1900s
• Great Lakes and major port cities of the Great Lakes
• Ships and shipping on the Great Lakes
• Immigration
• Dangers faced by ships on the Great Lakes

An answer sheet is included for the teacher. The webquest takes most students 30 to 50 minutes to complete depending on the age of your students. Feel free to modify this activity if needed to fit the needs of your students. I highly suggest this webquest for students in grades 6-12.
