Geography: A scavenger hunt, study guide, and practice sheet help students learn to locate five Great Lakes, nine states and provinces, and six major cities of the Great Lakes. A quiz and answer key are also included. Click here to see website supports.

Geology: Students explore the history of earth, how the Great Lakes were formed, core sampling, and fossils. The unit includes two hands-on science activities, two sets of questions, a study guide, quiz, and answer key. Click here to see website supports.

Hydrology: Kids play with water to discover its properties. Then they learn about the water cycle, water movement in the lakes, differences between salty and fresh water, and eutrophication. Reading: Paddle-to-the-Sea, the 1942 Caldecott Honor Book, tells the story of a carved figure that travels through the Great Lakes. It’s perfect for teaching figurative language, summarizing, and analysis of multimedia elements of a text. The unit includes a 32-page foldable student booklet, figurative language quiz, and multimedia quiz.

Language Arts: Students conduct short research projects and explore related websites to learn more about the Great Lakes. They collaborate to create a booklet, Facts About the Great Lakes, then compare statistics and construct graphs. Each student researches a native or non-native organism and creates a Great Lakes Species Flip Booklet. As these projects are wrapped up, students use the website to conduct informal research about estuaries, forest fires, shipping and shipwrecks, as well as Niagara Falls and hydroelectricity.
