Role plays allow students to experience history, and build their own picture of what happened in the past. They also build empathy for other people.
This role play asks students to think about the choices faced by Americans during the Great Migration. Students will take on a variety of roles that had a stake in the Great Migration to discuss the choices people made about moving North, or staying in the South, aiming to come to agreement on whether or not moving North was a good choice. They will think deeply about cause and effect, rights, community, discrimination, jobs, segregation, and many other influencing factors.
Students will enjoy getting to play roles. You will enjoy the discussion and rich historical thinking that results.
