Tragically, Maryam Marizkhani passed away on July 15, 2017. As a tribute to her work, I am now making this permanently free to all who will spread the word about Maryam's astonishing achievements.
This is an original article I wrote about the 2014 Fields Medal Winner Maryam Mirzakhani, the first woman to win the award. The article is 5 paragraphs and is designed for readers from grades 4 - 8. There are 2 pages of questions; one page focuses on math questions ("How old was Mirzakhami when she won the award?" for example, as well as ones that will require advanced problems solving techniques.
There are also questions about Maryam's life and approach towards working in the field of mathematics. She talks about how she spends a long time working on problems, and how she approaches them very slowly and carefully. There is also a discussion about how she feels about being a woman in a field that is dominated by men.
There is also a page of suggestions about how this activity could be extended to investigate graphing and problem solving.
The cover can be used as poster to hang in your classroom: this achievement should be celebrated!
