Product Description
This 13-page activity packet includes the writing directions, articles, and graphic organizers to do a basic introduction lesson on reading strategies, note-taking strategies, and paragraph writing for a claim and counterclaim, which would be perfect for the beginning of a school year, beginning of a semester, or as an argumentative essay unit starter. This is not a full essay assignment, but merely breaks up parts of an argumentative essay. The same question is posed both days: Should teenagers (18 and under) be allowed to undergo cosmetic surgery? The first day, read an article from the New York Times and note-take in the graphic organizer about claims and counterclaims for whether teenagers should be allowed to undergo cosmetic surgery. The graphic organizer will ask students to come up with 2 reasonable points for each side of the argument, paraphrasing the idea and citing the source. Finish with a paragraph assignment to pick one side of the argument and write a controlling idea, supported with points from the article. The second day takes the skills up just a small notch. The students will roll-over skills from day 1 on reading and note-taking with 2 articles. Students will then write a paragraph on the counterclaim to their claim from yesterday. Please note that this document is just the directions, graphic organizer, and articles (which I'm not selling, just including for ease of preparation). The product does not include a lesson plan, help with teaching reading, note-taking, or writing strategies, outlines for paragraph writing, or rubrics. This product is available to provide paragraph writing prompts, articles, and graphic organizers. Essentially, I did the material prep for you. This product resembles Common Core materials from New York State and the NYS Common Core English Regents Exam. Thank you for your interest.
