I think it is essential that we teach our students the meanings of greater than/less than. Rather than teaching children that the bigger number gets the big mouth, I think it’s better that students know the meaning of the symbols themselves right from the start.
The same way children know that +/- mean to add and subtract, we would love for them to feel just as confident about >/<. I have created a product that I hope will enable your students to easily decipher between these two frequently confused symbols. After all, we don’t want our students to reach sixth grade still saying, “The bigger number gets the bigger mouth.”
We can do this by making the entire experience very interesting and very memorable.
This product can be used to support your existing greater than/less than instruction, or it can easily act as a stand alone lesson as part of your overall Number Sense unit.
I have written a very engaging and funny story for kids. This story centers around two main characters: Gary Greater Than and Lucy Less Than. I have used these two characters for years and finally gotten around to documenting their tale!
Everyone loves Gary and Lucy, even the boys! The girls find the story cute and the boys, well, they think Gary is pretty funny, so it’s a win-win for everyone! It’s an engaging story of how two Math symbols with so much in common, met in the park one day while counting their gum balls.
I have kids coming back to my room years later to ask me if I still teach “Gary and Lucy”. They report that thanks to my lesson, they have no trouble with greater than and less than. I hope you have a similar experience! Even parents report it’s helped them too!
This product includes:
• a copy of the Gary Greater Than and Lucy Less Than story for you and your students to read aloud
• two worksheets for students to practice their skills
• a cover page for students to color
• two copies of mini-posters of Gary Greater Than and Lucy Less Than (one set in bright colors, one a little more “ink friendly”).
• a brief user-guide
Together, the booklet becomes a kind of portable anchor chart for students to have all year long. They’ll never forget Gary and Lucy after this memorable lesson!
The preview shows all of the items included in this product, except the user-guide, answer key and color cover page.
If you need this product customized in any way, please let me know, I'd be happy to help!
