This packet includes four different types of math journals that are all centered around the number sense concept greater than/less than/equal to. The four types of journals are:
1. Represent with symbols - students will cut and paste symbols to make number sentences true.
2. Color it in! - students will color in numbers that are greater than OR less than.
3. Which 3 Could It Be? - students will be given 4 numbers. They are to write a number that is greater than, less than, and equal to the four numbers in their math journal.
4. What Does the Story Say? - read the math journal prompts with students. They will draw a picture that answers the journal. This type of math journal does not specifically have one right answer, giving students the opportunity to be creative while problem solving.
These math journals are ENGAGING because they allow students to cut, paste, write, create, and problem solve; all skills that a mathematician needs to be successful. Each activity is differentiated so students at all levels can benefit from them! These were also great for me, as I used them as quick and easy assessment in order to assess my students' depth of knowledge and understanding when it came to this number sense concept.
