Greek & Latin Roots Color by Codes

Are you looking for an engaging activity to help your kiddos practice identifying and using Greek and Latin roots? These color by codes have been extremely beneficial in helping my students remember commonly used Greek and Latin roots and using those to identify unknown words in our text.

I use these color by codes in my classroom is a variety of ways.

  • The first way I do this is pass the page out that I wish to use. I have my students identify the roots they see within the words on the page. I write those roots on the board. I then ask the students to determine what the roots mean drawing on prior knowledge, correcting them as we go.
  • The second way I use these color by codes is to have my students underline the roots in the word and google the definition of the roots. They can type in something like, “What is the meaning of the root semi?” If we do it this way, I check my student’s work before I allow them to begin coloring, clearing up misconceptions as they go.
  • Last, I teach the roots the students will be using explicitly. Then, I give the students the page as an assessment to determine if they remember what’s been taught. I check it, then allow them to color.

There are 16 seasonal themed color by codes included in this product. Each color by code uses anywhere from 10-16 roots throughout the page.

I have included pages that tell the roots that are used, which color by code they are included on, what the words mean, if the root is Greek or Latin, and which words with those roots are used on the page.

Answer keys are included in this product.
