Product Description
Learning piles of roots and their definitions is a great accomplishment, but have you ever wanted more than just rote memorization and listing words?

The CCSS standards regarding Greek and Latin affixes ask us to “USE common, grade- appropriate Greek or Latin affixes and roots as clues to the meaning of a word”(L.7.4b, caps mine). So if you’re ready to APPLY these roots and start putting them in context, check out this set!

This set of TEN kid-approved activities engages ALL learners and brings students up from just memorizing into critical thinking. They each only take one class period to complete, so they can function as review, challenge, SUB PLANS, or sparking student interest at ANY phase of learning. Each has a rubric for easy grading.

The activities are listed in order from EASIEST to MOST CHALLENGING, so you can decide the best sequence (OR differentiate, OR allow choice).

This 26- page download includes:

1. Teach Me a Root: Focus on learning just one at a time
2. Root Trees: Learn how roots "branch" into words
3. Real-World Vocab: Identify words that use affixes
4. Affixes in the News: Decode words in the context of sentences
5. Invent-a-Word: Piece together affixes to create fake words
6. Career Vocab: Play with affixes in law, medicine, or something else
7. Ace the Test: Identify affixes in SAT words
8. Affixes in Harry Potter: unpack the meaning in wizarding words
9. Decoding Foreign Languages: See how Latin roots appear in Spanish words
10. Using Affixes in Writing: Write short stories using affix words
11. BONUS: 5 Vocab Logs to collect different themed words that use affxes

These activities directly address CCSS standards for grades 6-8 (L.6.4b, L.7.4b, L.8.4b), BUT these are also relevant for high school vocabulary!
