This letter is to be completed after finishing the reading of the myth "Origin of the Seasons." Students are to construct a letter from the point of view of one the gods/goddesses mentioned in the myth. Students must use textual evidence from the myth throughout their letter. This assessment not only challenges students to use textual evidence, but challenges them to understand how point of view can alter the perspective of a reader. I provide students with a modeled example before asking them to create their own letter.
This is a great way to assess students' understanding while avoiding the typical test/quiz format. The rubric that comes with the assignment gives students clear expectations and makes grading easy for the teacher. Also attached is a graphic organizer to assist struggling students. This can also be used as an in class assignment, homework, or project. The assignment aligns with CCSS in various grades-- use of textual evidence, understanding point of view, and use of writing components.
Included in this is: explanation of assignment with rubric, graphic organizer, and model example.
